Since the loss of her wife, Kate Fleming, Charlene has became a tireless advocate for marriage equality and equal legal protections for LGBT families. Her testimony helped pass landmark domestic partnership legislation in the state of Washington. Charlene maintains a close working relationship with Equal Rights Washington and has established an internship in honor of Kate with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. In January, 2009 Charlene was appointed by Governor Chris Gregoire as a Commissioner for the Washington State Human Rights Commission.
